Child Support...in North Carolina?

I fiance just went to court to have his support reduced from $866 per to $440 per for 1 child. His ex wife if is saying that's not enough...my fiance only makes $13.50 hr now since he lost his business. She sayng that he makes more because of side jobs he gets (drywall). but this is not a regular thing, he sometimes doesn't have any side work for weeks. His lawyer said that they only take your steady job income in determining support. But she gos on to say that how can we afford everything we have. I work a full-time job and contribute to the household. BTW she is not working and collects $686.00 for disability and about $300 for her other daughter from another relationship, but that will end this year when she makes 18. On cout date was rescheduled to 3/13, when my fiance attorney said he wants me to come in and state that I do contribute to the household. What I asking is...can side work that is not stable income be used also to determine support?
